A healing space for memory and community
Pabna has been a prominent center for handloom textiles since the Mughal period, with weavers — Hindu and Muslim — using local, high- quality cotton in their craft. History of the Calico Cotton Mill in Pabna. The Calico Cotton Mill was established in 1967, began product in 1969, and was known for high- quality affair across the country.
Why chosen this negative space:
Repurposing the mill not only preserves cultural heritage but also symbolically “weaves” new life into a place once central to livelihoods. The adaptive reuse respects the site’s identity while turning a space of past labor into one of healing, reconnection, and hope.
Current problem :
-Disappearing history
-Lost livelihoods
-Cultural Disconnect
-Abandoned space increasing crime
Intended Healing Space :
Reimagining this space as healing space by
- Weaving together memory of this mill – Represent by a memory wall
-Lost livelihoods and Cultural disconnect solved by –community participation
*(lower income group people: street food cart , temporary hand craft shop, tea stall )
*Community based training center
Converted the waterfront space into a community space
(story telling zone, observation deck, ghat, open air stage, platform for workers history)
Concept :
Creating a journey through a pathway where connect history, culture and community. This journey represents the scenario of Pabna city (A walk along Pabna’s main thoroughfare unfolds a linear journey through its heritage, revealing one historical landmark after another in a seamless urban tapestry.)
