Project Description
In Dakshinkhan, Dhaka, an abandoned nursery—once full of life—fell into neglect, becoming a place of crime, disconnection, and environmental decay. This project reimagines it as a healing sanctuary where birds, nature, and people share a safe, restorative space. Inspired by the protective form of a bird’s nest, the design offers shelter, care, and renewal amidst the pressures of city life.
Socially, community activity deters crime and substance abuse. Children connect directly with plants, water, and wildlife, while adults rediscover peace and memory through nature.
Ecologically, the design restores bird habitats with dense planting, quiet zones away from noise, a central lake for fresh water, and integrated feeding stations.
Economically, shaded areas beneath the structures host local vendors, creating micro-business opportunities and attracting cafes, workshops, and community gatherings.
The form is circular, modular, and elevated, connected by floating skybridges. Each module blends open seating with avian care spaces, while the shaded undercroft fosters commerce and social exchange. By uniting ecological restoration, social connection, and economic vitality, the project transforms a site of dereliction into a living sanctuary for all species.
