Project Description
This project narrates the story of a lost village-a place whose physical form remains, but whose spirit has faded because of modernity. Located on the west bank of a dying river in southern Bengal, the village was once vibrant, sustained by the river’s bounty. Over time, younger generations migrated to cities in search of new livelihoods, leaving behind an aging community of former fishermen whose memories of the river are slowly fading, much like the river itself.
The design aims to reconnect the elder generation with the river by creating a serene resting space along its bank. Named গাঙকুল (Gangkul)- a local fisherman's term meaning “the bank of the river”-this space is envisioned as more than a location; it is a cultural anchor where people once gathered, embarked on journeys and shared life’s moments. The design seeks to revive this spirit offering a place for elders to reconnect with their past, for youth to rediscover their roots and for children to hear the stories that will carry the village’s legacy forward.
The chosen site feature lush greenery and a small pond, once used for fish cultivation, separated from the river by a narrow strip of land. The proposal includes seating area connected by a wooden bridge leading to circular deck at the river’s edge, suitable for docking small boats or quite reflection. Surrounded by trees, the space fosters relaxation, storytelling and renewed bond between people and nature.
