Project Description
Negative Space Summary
Dinajpur Railway Station has three platforms connected by two pedestrian bridges—one linking the station building to Platform 2, and another from Platform 2 to Platform 3. The second bridge extends beyond Platform 3 to reach a nearby road. However, Platform 3 has become an abandoned one, leaving the second bridge isolated and poorly visible. Homeless and marginalized children who spend much of their day here hawking goods are particularly exposed, making the space a site of neglect and fear rather than opportunity.
Intended Healing Transformation
The transformation unfolds in two layers. The immediate change activates the space with vibrant, engaging features—children-operated shop, gallery pathways, and public gathering spaces—that attract people, encourage natural surveillance, and replace neglect with life and activity. The long-term change focuses on shaping lives: thoughtfully designed learning programs, creative workshops, and skill-building opportunities aim to instill hope, aspiration, and self-worth in children. Over time, this nurtures constructive futures and inspires positive change across generations, moving the site beyond its history of vulnerability.
Key Design Idea
The ground space functions as a public gathering area, connecting to four surrounding roads. Above it—aligned with the pedestrian bridge’s highest level—is a children-run shop flanked by gallery pathways displaying their art. These lead to a walkway surrounding a mature Krishnochura tree, offering views toward the railway station. A radial stair links to the elevated learning and performance zone, with a secluded “thinking zone” halfway up within the tree’s canopy. Elevated spaces 20 ft above ground ensure visibility and safety, while play zones below keep the site active at all hours.
