The Line and the Ring: A Healing Threshold Beneath the Gazipur Flyover
Rethinking Urban Residual Space for People, Communities, and the Planet
Beneath the Gazipur Chowrasta flyover lies a neglected urban void — noisy, dusty, and cut off from public life. This overlooked negative space offers a chance to create a healing environment for the local community, especially garment workers and nearby residents who lack safe, calm, and inclusive areas for rest, socialization, and pause.
The design introduces two key elements: The Line and The Ring. The Line is a gently inclined pathway that gradually separates users from traffic noise and market bustle. Along its route, perforated bamboo modules — in square, circular, and triangular patterns — function as seating, planters, and pause points. These reconfigurable, portable units allow the space to shift between gatherings, informal markets, cultural events, or quiet relaxation.
The Ring, at the journey’s end, is an elevated circular sanctuary — partially enclosed to block disturbances, yet open to sky and greenery. It serves as a space for interaction, storytelling, and reconnection with nature, fostering calm and unity.
Built with locally sourced Gazipur bamboo and selective concrete, the project transforms an infrastructural void into a resilient, adaptable public realm, promoting mental well-being, social cohesion, and environmental care.
