Project Description
Dhaka’s rapid growth has come at a cost-shade and greenery are disappearing as trees are cut in the name of development. In a city where summer heat and monsoon rains dominate, pedestrians face harsh, unprotected streets.
The Bamboo Healing Spine transforms sidewalks into shaded, living corridors. Locally-sourced bamboo arches, wrapped in vines, provide dappled shade. Solar-powered misting nozzles cool the air, while recycled rainwater sustains planter boxes above. Naturally cool clay seating offers rest for pedestrians, while small bamboo kiosks create safe spaces for vendors, enriching street life and supporting livelihoods.
This design embodies the competition’s triple focus: People gain comfort and safety, Community benefits from inclusive, active public spaces, and Planet is respected through renewable materials, low-energy systems, and urban greening.
More than infrastructure, the Bamboo Healing Spine is a climate-responsive, scalable solution to Dhaka’s disappearing tree cover- restoring shade, comfort, and ecological care to the city’s streets.
