Project Description
With a vision to transform a neglected, unsafe site into a vibrant community, “Shuchi” is a place where human presence, connection, and care restore safety and emotional wellbeing. In Bangla, “Shuchi” means purity or renewal, symbolizing the change from a polluted, unused area into a inspiring space.
Our chosen site, Khilgaon Rail-gate, is densely populated and suffers from heavy traffic congestion. Unused railway tracks here have become a bustling line of makeshift shops and vendors. Near the track’s endpoint, illegal dumping adds to the soil & air pollution, yet the area remains active with daily life. Our vision was to transform this polluted, unwelcoming, risky environment into a place of healing.
The transformed space can serve as a street theatre and social gathering spot, raising awareness on social issues among nearby slum residents. It focuses on street children, offering a safe place to play, learn, and receive weekly lessons on primary education, hygiene, good and bad touch, and adolescence. It also provides occasional rest for passersby, creating a soothing and calming environment.
To illustrate the impact, we introduce an imaginary character, Kolpona, 17 years old young mother of two kids. From an unaware family, she was married off early and became a mother at a young age, leading to various health problems. Through occasional programs by NGOs and relevant authorities held in this place, she learned about the dangers of early marriage, health issues, and her rights, becoming more aware and empowered.
The transformation not only changes the place but also the people around it and their views. The aesthetic of space has been also designed keeping in mind of site surroundings. Thus, tin, bamboo, clay pitcher and pots have been used as material to blend with the environment and concrete 8 inch elevated stage (10' by 10') mentioned social purpose. “Shuchi” transforms a neglected site into a healing space where connection, care, and everyday activity naturally restore well-being.
