Project Description
When healthy people feel down, they often retreat to nature, drawing on its healing power for mind and soul. Even when natural escapes are distant or hard to reach, most of us will seek them out. However, people with disabilities lack equal access to these green sanctuaries. They, too, endure deep sadness and pent-up anxiety that calls out for relief. In Dhaka, virtually few accommodations address their psychological or physiological well-being. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and the National Survey on Persons with Disabilities, 4.742 million people nationwide (2.4 percent of the population) and 2.53 percent of Dhaka’s residents live with a physical or mental impairment. Yet parks, playgrounds, and other public facilities remain largely inaccessible and unwelcoming. Our design envisions a utopian sensory park repurposed from abandoned or neglected urban voids across Dhaka. This inclusive green oasis provides barrier-free access to tranquil landscapes where people with disabilities can relax, converse, engage their senses, interact with others, and showcase their talents.
By fostering these connections, we aim to heal both individuals and the wider community, while also expanding much-needed green space in our crowded city.Symbolically, we’ve identified three site categories based on age and user type:-'Small sites' for children-'Medium sites' for young people-'Large sites' for all agesOur proposal focuses on the large site, which—by omitting age-specific programming—can be readily adapted into small or medium sites elsewhere, ensuring a scalable, inclusive approach to urban regeneration in Dhaka.
