Project Description
The site is an abandoned rooftop above Gulistan Trade Center. It is chosen due to it being placed in the heart of Gulistan and beside Gulistan Super market which was once Gulistan Cinema Hall. It was a place of gathering for the locals. But now Gulistan is a nightmare for the people of Dhaka for its traffic, noise, crowd and pick pocketers. The aim of this project is to relieve some of that old glory and give the people a place where they can relax and forget the stress of the city life.
The first challenge is to reduce the traffic & crowd noise. For this reason, the periphery of the roof is enclosed with laminated polycarbonate glass. Stairs have been installed on both west and east side of the site for easy accessibility. Inside the roof a linear and circular pathway is created to encourage movement. Along the pathway seating arrangement is made to relax. Waterbody is created at the center to give a serene and calming atmosphere. Surrounding the pathway is green spaces with local trees, bushes and flowers for the people to not only be connected with the nature but also provide shade and reduce noises. The large space is opened up in north-east for major gathering, activities or watching sports or cinema on a projector. Like the old days!
