Project Description
Behind the railway line at Joragate, Khulna — close to the busy New Market — lies a neglected strip of land. This transitional edge between the station and commercial life is often occupied by street children: flower sellers, porters, and others who work, rest, and pass unnoticed. Despite its central location, the space offers no safety, comfort, or recognition, leaving these children excluded from the city’s public life.
The proposed transformation reclaims this overlooked corner as an inclusive, child-centered healing space. The aim is to restore dignity, provide moments of rest, and support mental well-being through gathering, play, and creative expression. Ecological care is integrated by adding greenery, shaded areas, and soft landscaping, easing the hard, noisy urban environment.
The key design idea, Platform Zero, represents a symbolic platform not found on any map — built for belonging rather than departure. Its organizing form is a hexagon, symbolizing wholeness and representing six essential rights of a child: safety, love, learning, play, nourishment, and dignity. These values are embodied in interconnected zones: the Haven Hexa shaded pavilion, an Expression Wall for unrestrained art, an Ongsho Wall for shared food and clothing, a reading nook, reclaimed-material play features, and pockets of planting.
By turning an unused railway edge into a vibrant commons, Platform Zero transforms a space of invisibility into one of care and connection — a small but lasting pause in the city’s rush where excluded children can feel seen, safe, and valued.
