Project Description
Beneath the roar of the metro
A forgotten corridor breathes again
Here pause becomes presence
and strangers become community
In Dhaka’s relentless pace where the metro hums overhead, spaces to pause are rare. Biroti reclaims the under-metro stretch between Raju Chattar and Bangla Academy, once a lively corridor of kiosks and gatherings, transforming it into a vibrant public realm where the city can slow down and reconnect.
The concept is simple: create a breathing public space where safety and connection flourish, and the mind can find stillness amid the urban rush. Retaining and reorganizing the existing kiosks honors the site’s cultural memory while giving them a dignified presence. The program integrates walkways, cycling tracks, children’s play zones, multi-purpose spaces, an amphitheater, seating pods, a cultural and bioskop zone, art installations, vendor stalls, and reading nooks, inviting people to linger, interact, and belong.
Material choices are bamboo, reclaimed wood, and recycled elements, creating a warm earthy palette. Prioritizing pedestrian movement, greenery, and inclusive spaces, Biroti fosters mental well-being, cultural expression, and everyday encounters. This is more than an urban intervention; it heals the space and its people, stitching back the threads of community beneath the city’s new metro spine.
