Project Description
Metronome is an immersive subterranean observatory that investigates architecture as a machine capable of manipulating perception, emotion, and human behavior. Drawing inspiration from Hirak Rajar Deshe and the monumental astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar, the project transforms space into a cinematic sequence of sensory control, psychological tension, and atmospheric transformation. Rather than functioning as a conventional building, OBSCURA operates as an experiential journey where light, sound, reflection, materiality, and movement become tools for choreographing the mind and body.
The project unfolds through a descending spatial sequence composed of mirrored chambers, reflective corridors, acoustic voids, and compressed transitional spaces. At the entrance, fragmented reflections and perforated light create instability and curiosity, dissolving the boundary between the visitor and the architecture. As the journey progresses deeper underground, circulation narrows, light diminishes, and sound becomes increasingly controlled. Mirror surfaces distort spatial perception, while dripping water, echoing chambers, and acoustic dampening create a constantly shifting sensory atmosphere.
The architecture gradually removes comfort and orientation, forcing visitors into heightened awareness of movement, silence, gravity, and isolation. Sloped floors, tactile surfaces, narrow apertures, and controlled environmental systems transform circulation into an embodied psychological experience. This descent acts as a metaphor for invisible systems of control, obedience, and manipulation embedded within contemporary society.
The sequence ultimately opens into a calm courtyard filled with natural light, rhythmic proportions, and spatial clarity. After the oppressive underground journey, this final release space restores stillness and emotional balance while leaving traces of ambiguity and reflection. Metronome proposes architecture not as static enclosure, but as a perceptual instrument capable of shaping consciousness through environmental choreography and sensory manipulation.
