Project Description
Bangladesh continues to face a critical challenge regarding street-connected children. According to UNICEF and studies by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, hundreds of thousands of children live and work on the streets of cities such as Dhaka and Chittagong, with nationwide estimates often exceeding one million in vulnerable street situations. A significant portion of these children are either school dropouts or have never entered formal education due to poverty, displacement, and the necessity of daily income. As a result, they remain excluded from structured learning and long-term social mobility.
This mobile school addresses this crisis by reversing the conventional model of schooling. Instead of requiring children to reach institutions, the institution becomes mobile. Contained within a compact volume, the structure unfolds into a shaded micro-classroom equipped with foldable seating, writable panels, and modular book storage. It can be strategically placed in high-density street zones, adapting to shifting urban conditions.
During teaching hours, the capsule functions as an open learning platform where volunteers, NGOs, and citizens can conduct informal classes. Beyond these hours, it transforms into a public seating pavilion and community reading node, encouraging book donation and shared literacy. This multifunctional strategy embeds the structure into everyday civic life, reducing social segregation.
Constructed from lightweight steel framing, wood panels, and weather-resistant fabric, the design ensures portability, durability, and climatic responsiveness. Within its strict spatial constraint, the project demonstrates how minimal architecture can generate maximum social impact - transforming overlooked urban spaces into platforms of dignity, access, and educational opportunity.
