Selected Lens: Narrative depth
•Key Design Intention:
The core intention of The Solid Void is to create a space for emotional exchange, where the act of sharing an intimate reflection becomes the mechanism for accessing a shared presence. The project is rooted in the principle that true connection requires a mutual exchange of self. In a fragmented society, the design materializes the invisible threads connecting strangers. Using a lightweight steel frame, the project balances the physical "Solid" (geometry) and the emotional "Void" (repository of human life), proving architecture can catalyze profound empathy through the simple rule: to receive, one must first contribute.
•User Experience Narrative:
The journey begins with an Ascent via cantilevered stairs through an archway, marking the threshold to silence. At the summit, the visitor distills a thought, a wish, or a memory into a written "bequest" and leaves it in the central well—an act of self-expression and release. The Return occurs during the spiral descent, shifting focus from individual reflection to a sense of shared presence. At the base, a message from another traveler is retrieved as a viaticum—a shared fragment of experience for the journey ahead. Curatorial filtration ensures the well remains a source of inspiration, bridging unknown others through an anonymous yet deeply personal dialogue.
•Spatial, Symbolic, and Functional Strategy:
The spatial strategy is driven by a symbolic experience translated into a "space-flow" geometry.
Interaction: Linear stairs provide an intuitive starting point, with the arch acting as an inviting threshold that separates external noise from the internal ritual.
The Core: The vertical “well” is divided into Intake and Output chambers, acting as the heart of emotional circulation. This functional core ensures the physical movement of the "bequests."
Dual-Path System: The linear ascent symbolizes the clarity of preparation and the weight of self-reflection, while the spiral descent represents the integration of the collective experience after the act of sharing.
•Construction strategy:
To provide an effect of the lightness, steel was chosen as the main material. The installation is conceived as a prefabricated, modular system. Utilizing a lightweight frame with bolted connections, the structure ensures a circular lifecycle through ease of assembly and zero-waste disassembly. The choice of steel - a highly recyclable material - combined with the modular nature of the design, allows for indefinite relocation, making it a sustainable intervention that can adapt to various contexts without environmental degradation.
•The 10m³ Constraint as a Design Driver:
The 10 m3 limit enables a public project with maximum intimacy, creating a concentrated "space-flow." These constraints necessitated a lightweight, wireframe structure that allows light to permeate the volume without overcrowding it. The mandate transforms the object into a secure cocoon, offering a brief yet profound encounter with oneself and the collective human journey within the urban density. The strict volume ensures that the focus remains on the intensity of the experience rather than its physical footprint.
