Project Description
Cozy Women’s Hub is a modular roadside women’s comfort and safety space designed to restore dignity, privacy, and security for women in public environments. In many parts of Bangladesh, women lack access to safe spaces for breastfeeding, changing, resting, or managing menstrual hygiene while traveling. This project addresses that gap through a compact, easily installable 10m³ intervention that can be placed beside existing public toilets or transport nodes.
Key Design Intention & Selected Lens :
The project is developed through a Gender-Sensitive Spatial Lens, focusing on safety, dignity, and emotional comfort in public infrastructure. Rather than treating the space as a utility add-on, the design reframes it as a protective micro-environment—one that acknowledges women’s physiological, social, and cultural needs. The core intention is to transform a small volume into a psychologically secure refuge. The design prioritizes layered privacy, controlled visibility, and a warm interior atmosphere, ensuring that women feel protected rather than exposed.
Spatial, Symbolic & Functional Strategy :
Spatial Strategy:
The layout follows a gradient of privacy—Public → Semi-Private → Private. Upon entry, a buffer zone prevents direct visual intrusion. The inner chamber accommodates breastfeeding and baby care, separated from the changing and hygiene area. Compact zoning ensures that each function remains discreet yet accessible.
Functional Strategy:
The unit includes:
• Baby feeding space
• Changing area
• Basin for hygiene
• Sanitary napkin shelf
• Seating for short rest
All elements are arranged along the perimeter to maximize usable floor space. Vertical storage and wall-mounted fixtures minimize clutter and enhance spatial efficiency.
Symbolic Strategy:
The form represents protection and enclosure. The modest exterior contrasts with a softer interior, symbolizing the idea that even small architectural gestures can create emotional comfort. The structure acts as a visible marker of inclusivity in public space—subtly advocating for women-friendly infrastructure.
User Experience Narrative :
A woman traveling by road approaches the hub beside a public toilet facility. From the outside, the structure feels approachable yet secure. Upon entering, she is immediately shielded from public view by the internal partition. The lighting is soft and indirect. Ventilation slots maintain airflow without compromising privacy. She can sit, rest, breastfeed her child, or change comfortably without fear of exposure. The basin and hygiene shelf are within arm’s reach, reducing movement in the compact space. The atmosphere feels calm and contained—offering a temporary pause from the chaos of the roadside environment. The experience is not just functional; it is emotional. The hub becomes a moment of reassurance within an otherwise male-dominated public realm.
Impact of the 10m³ Constraint :
The 10m³ volume constraint shaped the project fundamentally. Every inch demanded precision. Instead of expanding horizontally, the design maximizes vertical surfaces for storage and services. Compact dimensions encouraged multifunctional use of space, minimal circulation loss, and a clear spatial hierarchy. The constraint forced clarity—eliminating unnecessary elements and prioritizing essential needs. As a result, the project demonstrates how thoughtful spatial organization within a limited volume can generate meaningful social impact.
Cozy Women’s Hub proves that dignity does not require scale—only intention.
